Earth-moving machinery — Safety — Part 1: General requirements

This international standard specifies general safety requirements for earth-moving machinery, attachments, and related derived machinery.

ISO 20474-1:2008 specifies general safety requirements for earth-moving machinery as defined in ISO 6165, including requirements common to two or more machine families. It applies to machine attachments and derived machinery primarily designed for loosening, picking up, moving, transporting, distributing, or grading earth and rock. The standard addresses significant hazards and risk reduction measures during commissioning, operation, and maintenance, covering access, operator stations, controls, steering and braking systems, visibility, warning devices, stability, object handling, noise, protective devices, lifting and towing, electromagnetic compatibility, electrical and electronic systems, pressurized systems, fuel and hydraulic tanks, fire protection, attachments, maintenance, underground operation, and rear-mounted winches. It also defines verification procedures and information-for-use requirements, including safety labels, operator manuals, and machine marking. ISO 20474-1 is intended to be used with the machine-family-specific parts of ISO 20474 and with ISO/TS 20474-14 for national and regional provisions.

Application Scope: For manufacturers, designers, engineers, safety professionals, conformity assessment bodies, and users of earth-moving machinery and attachments. This edition is not applicable to machines manufactured before its publication date.
