This standard specifies safety requirements and verification methods for cable excavators and their lifting, braking, stability, and control systems.

ISO 20474-12:2008 specifies safety requirements specific to cable excavators, including crawler-type and wheeled machines used with dragline buckets, grabs, front shovels, lifting systems, and specialized attachments. It covers access, operator stations, controls and indicators, steering, swing brakes, lift systems, ropes, limiting devices, lift-capacity calculations, safety-related control parts, stability, electrical power sources, verification procedures, and information for use. The standard is intended to be applied with ISO 20474-1 and ISO/TS 20474-14, and includes normative requirements and test methods for cable excavator swing brakes.
