An international safety standard specifying requirements and protective measures for wheeled and crawler backhoe loaders.

ISO 20474-4:2008 specifies safety requirements for wheeled and crawler backhoe loaders and is intended to be used with ISO 20474-1 for general earth-moving machinery safety requirements and ISO/TS 20474-14 for mandatory national and regional provisions. The standard covers significant hazards during commissioning, operation, maintenance, and reasonably foreseeable misuse. It addresses protective structures, operator stations, warning devices, stability, loader and backhoe applications, traveling and transportation, verification of safety requirements, and information for use. Informative Annex A provides a test method for determining backhoe loader lift capacity, while Annex B includes illustrations of representative machine configurations.
