This AASHTO standard provides four laboratory procedures for determining the relationship between moisture content and the density of soils compacted in 4-in. or 6-in. molds using a 2.5-kg (5.5-lb) rammer dropped from a height of 305 mm (12 in.). It covers sample preparation, equipment requirements, compaction procedures, moisture and density calculations, optimum moisture content, maximum dry density, reporting, precision, and correction procedures for oversized particles.
The standard includes Methods A through D for materials passing the 4.75-mm (No. 4) sieve or 19.0-mm (3/4-in.) sieve, along with referenced AASHTO and ASTM standards and mandatory annex provisions for oversized-particle corrections.
Application Scope: Soil compaction testing, geotechnical laboratories, construction quality control, pavement and earthwork specifications, and field compaction control.
