description
BS EN 13586:2026 is the UK implementation of EN 13586:2026 and supersedes BS EN 13586:2020. It specifies safety and design requirements for non-powered means of access installed on cranes, including stairs, step ladders, rung ladders, spiral stairs, walkways, platforms, handrails, side protections, handholds, hatches, and manholes. The standard addresses access to control stations, maintenance locations, and certain erection and dismantling operations. It defines Type 1 and Type 2 access classifications, selection criteria, dimensional requirements, structural strength, verification methods, user information, significant hazards, and the relationship with Regulation (EU) 2023/1230. Slidable and retractable means of access are excluded except for movable hoop guards. Lighting, rescue equipment, and certain access requirements for frequently relocated cranes are outside the scope and may be addressed by crane-specific standards.
Application Scope: Applicable to crane manufacturers, designers, engineers, safety professionals, regulators, maintenance providers, employers, and organizations responsible for crane access, machinery safety, conformity assessment, and maintenance operations.
