Safety standard for portable UV germicidal equipment that uses uncontained UV sources.
This First Edition standard establishes safety requirements for portable UV germicidal equipment intended to expose air and surfaces in unoccupied areas with uncontained ultraviolet energy. It addresses motion detection, activation cycles, operating time limits, photobiological hazards, ozone assessment, safety instructions, and additional markings and instructions. The standard is intended for conformity assessment and is part of the joint Canada-United States national standard ANSI/CAN/UL 8803:2023.
Application Scope: Portable germicidal equipment intended to remain stationary during operation and used by ordinary persons, excluding hand-held equipment, equipment without motion detection safeguards, wireless-initiated or extended operation controls, and UV germicidal equipment covered by other standards.
