HM 50 Guidelines for the cleaning of tanks and lines for marine tank vessels carrying petroleum and refined products is the fourth edition of the Energy Institute Hydrocarbon Management guidance for tank cleaning and cargo line preparation on petroleum tank vessels.
The publication gives practical recommendations for cleaning and washing cargo tanks, flushing lines, controlling residues, eliminating water for critical cargoes, inspecting tanks, addressing coating and cargo compatibility issues, and preparing for a wide range of refined petroleum products. It is intended to support product quality when vessels change from one cargo to another while recognizing safety, environmental, MARPOL, ISGOTT, ISGINTT, and SOLAS considerations.
Topics include inert gas considerations, static electricity, bottom and line flushing, disposal of cargo residues, washing after black oil and white oil cargoes, treatment of FAME and biodiesel blends, aviation fuel precautions, kerosene, gas oil, diesel fuel, fuel oil, lubricating oils, solvents, naphthas, and other common cargo types.
Application Scope: Applies primarily to seagoing marine tank vessels carrying petroleum and refined products, and may also be used for inland barges. It does not cover chemicals or gases.
