What is this standard about?
This latest edition gives the most up-to-date guidelines on how electronic information should be managed to ensure that it is demonstrably trustworthy.
Who is this standard for?
- Business managers
- Records/IT managers
- Compliance officers
- Legal advisors in financial institutions
- Insurance companies
- Local government departments
Why should you use this standard?
Information is central to today's business world, and establishing its authenticity and integrity is increasingly important – especially where electronic information is used in dispute resolution or to demonstrate compliance.
Most organizations recognize this and are working hard to improve information governance. By conforming with the recommendations outlined in BS 10008, companies can help ensure the evidential weight of electronic information and minimize the risks from long-term information storage.
NOTE: The publication of ISO 16175-3 Information and documentation has further increased awareness of critical information held in business systems and the importance of its evidential weight, including questions of authenticity.
What’s changed since the last update?
The previous edition of BS 10008 was popular and is referenced in a number of authoritative guides and codes of practice in both the public and private sectors. The standard has now been revised to keep pace with expanding reliance on IT systems and includes the following changes:
- It describes how to deal with structured data
- It recognizes recent changes in how information is managed as an asset
- It covers stewardship of electronic information as an organizational activity
The standard has also been restructured to align with that of the main ISO management systems standards, including that of:
- BS EN ISO 9001:2015 Quality management systems – Requirements
- BS EN ISO/IEC 27001:2017 Information technology. Security techniques. Information security management systems. Requirements
- BS EN ISO 14001:2015 Environmental management systems. Requirements with guidance for use
