What is BS 1140 - Resistance spot welding of low carbon steel about?
BS 1140 is a British Standard that discusses resistance spot welding.
BS 1140 specifies procedures for resistance spot welding in the fabrication of assemblies of uncoated and coated low carbon steel comprising two or three thicknesses of metal, where the single sheet thickness of the components to be welded is within the following ranges:
- Uncoated sheets: 0.4 mm to 3.0 mm
- Uncoated plates: 3.0 mm to 12.0 mm
- Hot-dip zinc coated sheets: 0.4 mm to 3.0 mm
- hot-dip iron-zinc alloy coated sheets (galvaneal): 0.4 mm to 3.0 mm
- Electrolytic zinc coated sheets: 0.4 mm to 3.0 mm
- Electrolytic zinc-nickel coated sheets: 0.4 mm to 3.0 mm
- Terne coated sheets: 0.4 mm to 3.0 mm
- Aluminum coated sheets: 0.4 mm to 3.0 mm
- Hot-dip zinc-55 % aluminum coated sheets 0.4 mm to 3.0 mm
- Hot-dip zinc-5 % aluminum coated sheets 0.4 mm to 3.0 mm
Guidance on the choice of appropriate welding equipment and approximate spot welding conditions is given in annexes A and B respectively.
This procedure does not apply to the welding of sheets or plates of dissimilar thickness where the thickness ratio is greater than 3 to 1.
In addition to the definitive requirements, BS 1140 also requires the items detailed in clause 4 to be documented. For compliance with BS 1140, both the definitive requirements and the documented items have to be satisfied.
Who is BS 1140 - Resistance spot welding low carbon steel for?
BS 1140 on resistance spot welding is useful for:
- Resistance welding equipment manufacturers
- Mechanical engineers
- Welders and fabricators
- Construction and automotive industry
- Sheet metal manufacturers
- Manufacturers of pressure vessels
- Aerospace industry
Why should you use BS 1140 - Resistance spot welding low carbon steel?
Low carbon steels have good weld ability, and they can be welded without taking any special precautions. These steels are not capable of developing exceptional mechanical properties by heat treatment and henceforth there is no possibility to damage their basic properties by heating to weld or melt them.
BS 1140 provides you with requirements to be agreed upon between the contracting parties, types of parent metals, surface conditions and electrodes requirements and weld assessment for resistance spot welding of uncoated and coated low carbon steel comprising two or three thicknesses of metal.
BS 1140 also covers weld assessment tests and acceptance criteria to demonstrate whether your products are fit for purpose.
With the finest industrial procedures for resistance spot welding of uncoated and coated low carbon steel in accordance with BS 1140, you can standardize welding operations and improve the quality of welded joints.
