What is BS 131-1 – Notched bar tests about?
BS 131-1 standard is a part of the BS 131 series that discusses the Izod impact test on metals for notched bar tests. With the notched-bar impact testing, we determine the toughness of a metallic or polymeric material under various temperature conditions.
BS 131-1 specifies the conditions for carrying out the Izod impact test on metals. The test consists of measuring the energy absorbed in breaking a notched test piece by one blow from a striker carried by a pendulum. The test piece is gripped vertically with the root of the notch in the same plane as the upper face of the grips. The blow is struck on the same face as the notch and at a fixed height above it.
Who is BS 131-1 – Notched bar tests for?
BS 131-1 on the Izod impact test applies to:
- Manufacturer of Izod testing machine
- Quality maintenance personnel
- Engineering physics
Why should you use BS 131-1 – Notched bar tests?
In notched-bar impact testing, we determine the toughness of a metallic or polymeric material under various temperature conditions. The Izod impact test is a standard test that measures the impact energy needed to fracture a material. This test helps engineers and scientists assess the fracture properties of a given part or component.
BS 131-1 provides you with the test requirements in which the test piece is supported behind the notch by a rigid support block having a vertical groove to locate the test piece in the plane of swing of the pendulum. The groove accepts test pieces having tolerances. This ensures that any deformed metal does not interfere with the performance of the other tests methods for the Izod impact on metals.
With BS 131-1 you can be ensured that the products consistently meet and exceed quality assurance targets.
