What is BS 1344-22 – Vitreous enamel coatings’ resistance to thermal shock about?
BS 1344 is a British Standard series that discusses methods of testing vitreous enamel. The main purpose of the BS 1344 series is to provide best industry testing methods for vitreous enamel finishes to demonstrate whether they are capable of providing corrosion protection to the metal components they are applied on.
BS 1344-22 is the 22nd part of the BS 1344 series that specifies a method of test for determining the resistance to sudden changes in temperature (thermal shock) of vitreous enamel finishes on fabricated sheet steel components, that are near to, or likely to be affected by, a source of heat. It is not applicable to cooking utensils which are covered in BS 1344-16:1975 or to cast iron components which are covered in BS 1344-1:1994.
Who is BS 1344-22 - Vitreous enamel coatings’ resistance to thermal shock for?
BS 1344-22 on vitreous enamel coatings’ resistance to thermal shock is useful for:
- Vitreous enamel finish manufacturers
- Metallic coating manufacturers
- Fabricated sheet steel component manufacturers
- Companies providing coating solutions
- Quality control and testing personnel
Why should you use BS 1344-22 - Vitreous enamel coatings’ resistance to thermal shock?
Vitreous enamel finishes are widely used and applied on different substrates, ranging from glass to steel and aluminium alloys, given their excellent technical properties such corrosion protection and durability. However, to minimize products failures, it is essential that the enamel finishes be tested to demonstrate whether they are capable of providing adequate resistance to temperature fluctuations.
BS 1344-22 provides best industry guidance on the testing of vitreous enamel coatings to determine whether they are capable of withstanding temperature change without impairing the performance and service-life of the steel components.
If you are a manufacturer of vitreous enamel coatings, compliance with BS 1344-22 can be beneficial for quality control purposes.
As a result, you can ensure that your coatings provide adequate corrosion protection to fabricated sheet steel components such as burners and pan supports for cookers, such that their durability and performance remains uncompromised.
