What is BS 14100 about?
BS 14100 is a British Standard that discusses safety of machinery.
BS 14100 gives requirements and guidance to users of machinery on how to control hazardous energy on machines for safe working, and risk reduction measures during all types of interaction.
Note: BS 14100 does not apply to machines fed at high voltage, material handling vehicles (e.g., forklifts, pallet trucks), rider operated vehicles, construction plant machinery, mobile elevated working platforms, or road vehicles, process plant equipment, transportable or portable work machines, although the basic principles can often be applied.
Who is BS 14100 for?
BS 14100 on control of hazardous energy on machinery is relevant to:
- Machine manufacturers
- System integrators
- Machinery operators and maintenance personnel
- Control system component manufacturers
- Regulatory bodies
Why should you use BS 14100:2020?
A large number of people continue to be seriously injured and even killed by hazardous energy connected with the operation and maintenance of all different types of machines.
BS 14100 identifies the key stages of process isolation that helps the buyer in creating Hazardous Energy Control (HEC) procedures. Isolation points for all hazardous energy and its types are highlighted and steps for their disconnection are established.
BS 14100 provides guidelines and advice on isolation and control of hazardous energies at all types of machinery, ensuring machines are correctly de-energized. BS 14100 also includes detailed steps for re-energization of the machine.
BS 14100 covers both mechanical and electrical hazards.
BS 14100 aids with locking-off or lock-out for individuals and teams and provides requirements for warning signs or tag-outs as a part of safety protocols.
Overall, compliance with BS 14100 can help design and establish standardised safety and risk mitigation systems to effectively avoid occupational hazards and damages.
