What is BS 1553-1 - Graphical symbols for piping systems and plants about?
BS 1553 is a British Standard on the specification for graphical symbols for general engineering. The fundamental goal of BS 1553 is to help people grasp the meanings of piping systems that carry information vital for their safe and proper use by presenting it in a simplified manner, reducing the need for translation.
BS 1553-1 is the first part of the BS 1553 series that specifies graphical symbols for use in the creation of flow and piping diagrams for process plant and heating and ventilating installations. It is intended that diagrams employing these symbols should be drawn in accordance with the practice recommended in BS 5070.
Who is BS 1553-1 - Graphical symbols for piping systems and plants for?
BS 1553-1 on graphical symbols for piping systems and plants is useful for:
- Manufacturers of pipeline components and pipelines
- Designers of ventilation equipment
- Engineers
- Architects
Why should you use BS 1553-1 - Graphical symbols for piping systems and plants?
Graphical symbols show names, functions and conditions of equipment and facilities in simple pictures. Also, it is a visually perceptible figure with a particular meaning used to transmit information independently of language. Thus, graphical symbols help engineers to transfer ideas and information needed for the construction of technical devices and systems.
BS 1553-1 provides the:
- Symbols (or elements of symbols) used in conjunction with other symbols
- Basic functional symbols
- Basic and developed symbols for plant and equipment
- Heating and ventilating installations
Overall, graphical symbols or diagrams serve as the foundation for pipe and instrument details, as well as the construction of system control schemes, allowing for additional safety and operational investigations.
