What is BS 1707-Spray bar bench test about?
BS 1707 is a British Standard that discusses road surface dressing, bond coats, seals, preservatives and other sprays. It details the best practise for ensuring safety and maintenance of roads.
BS 1707 specifies a method of test for the accuracy of the spread of binder for bituminous binder sprayers for road surface dressing, bond coats, seals, preservatives and other sprays.
This test is the preferred UK method for undertaking the spray bar bench test referred to in the Factory Production Control requirements in Annex A of BS EN 12271:2006.
The test is undertaken when the equipment is stationary.
Who is BS 1707- Spray bar bench test for?
BS 1707 on test for binder sprayers is relevant to:
- Manufacturers of construction equipment
- Manufacturers of binder sprayers
- Road construction and maintenance companies
- Construction industry
- Civil engineers and contractors
- Local authorities
Why should you use BS 1707-Spray bar bench test?
Bituminous materials are employed in a variety of applications, including road construction, roofing, waterproofing. The principal application, road construction, has the same major challenges as concrete in terms of cost and durability.
BS 1707 provides the test conditions and test apparatus required for testing the accuracy of the spread of the binder. This can help you carry out the test effectively and accurately.
BS 1707 can help determine the accuracy of spread of binder i.e coefficient of variation of the volume of binder applied to the road surface, the calculation methods for which are provided.
Overall, compliance with BS 1707 to conduct the spray bar bench test can help ensure uniform and even distribution of the binder that helps maintain overall structural integrity of your engineering works.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS 1707:2018 supersedes BS 1707:1989, which is withdrawn. This is a full revision of the standard, and introduces the following principal changes:
- Removal of the “carpet tile” test as this is now superseded by BS EN 12272‑1
- The coefficient of variation calculation is aligned with BS EN 12272‑1
- Binder collectors can now be 50 mm or 100 mm wide
