What is BS 1868 - Specification for steel check valves about?
The main purpose of a check valve in a system is to prevent backflow, which could damage equipment or contaminate media upstream. BS 1868 discusses specifications for steel check valves (flanged and butt-welding ends) for the petroleum, petrochemical, and allied industries.
BS 1868 specifies requirements for cast or forged steel check valves with flanged or butt-welding ends of the following types:
- Swing, for vertical or horizontal flow
- Lift:
- Piston type, for angle or horizontal flow
- Ball-type, for angle or horizontal flow
- Ball-type, for vertical flow
- Disk type, for vertical flow
The terms “vertical”, “horizontal” and “angle” relate to the axes of the body ends.
Who is BS 1868 - Specification for steel check valves for?
BS 1868 on the specification for steel check valves is useful for:
- Screw manufacturers
- Check valves manufacturing industries
- Valves manufacturers
- Design engineers
- Authority of the petroleum Equipment Industry
- Petrochemical and allied industries
Why should you use BS 1868 - Specification for steel check valves?
Check valves are generally installed in pipelines to prevent backflow. A check valve is basically a one-way valve, in which the flow can run freely one way, but if the flow turns the valve will close to protect the piping, other valves, pumps, etc.
BS 1868 walks you through the design, materials, marking, testing, and shipping of steel check valves. When swing check valves are used in vertical lines the flow must be in an upward direction. For the purposes of BS 1868, any line with a slope (upward or downward) of 5° or less is deemed to be horizontal. In the case of angle pattern valves, the inlet should be vertical. Detailed diagrams and tables have been provided in BS 1868 to illustrate the shapes and dimensions of steel check valves.
As manufacturers of safety devices, BS 1868 enables you to endure high and low-pressure conditions. Using BS 1868 you can specify requirements for cast or forged carbon and alloy steel outside steel check valves with flanged or butt-welding ends.
