What is BS 2969 – Chain conveyors and coal ploughs about?
BS 2969 standard discusses the specification for high tensile steel chains for chain conveyors and coal ploughs. High-tensile steel chain means low-alloy steel which can withstand great strain without breaking or becoming deformed, having a yield strength range of 50,000 to 100,000 pounds per square inch.
BS 2969 specifies the requirements for a range of high-grade special-purpose calibrated, high-tensile, electrically welded, steel chains (round link) for use with machines and equipment in mining, such as the following:
- Conveyors, flexible and rigid, of the chain type, chain belt conveyors, gate end and stage loaders
- Coal ploughs, coal cutters and power loaders
- Bucket elevators
- Other similar machines are used in mines.
BS 2969 covers a size range from 14 to 30 mm. Three grades of quality (B, C and D) are specified about the mechanical properties of a chain.
Note: Chains covered by BS 2969 are not designed for lifting appliances, such as cranes and slings.
Who is BS 2969 – Chain conveyors and coal ploughs for?
BS 2969 on chain conveyors and coal ploughs applies to:
- Manufacturer of steel chains
- Quality testing personnel
- Design engineers
Why should you use BS 2969 – Chain conveyors and coal ploughs?
Chain conveyors are used for moving products down an assembly line and/or around a manufacturing or warehousing facility. Coal ploughs are a device with steel blades that shears off coal and pushes it onto the face conveyor.
BS 2969 ensure the quality of the steel chains by applying various treatments such as the quality of material, heat treatment, workmanship, link inserted in the course of manufacture, conditions at delivery, method of marking and inspection. BS 2969 also provides the test requirements which include: proof loading, selection of samples, dimensional tests, static tensile tests and additional tests for chain conveyors and coal ploughs.
With BS 2969 you can be ensured that the products consistently meet and exceed quality assurance targets.
