What is BS 3288-1-Performance of insulator and conductor fittings about?
BS 3288-1 is the business standard on private security management services which defines the relevant tests and test procedures together with the acceptance criteria.
BS 3288-1 is part one of a multi-series that specifies performance and general requirements for insulator and conductor fittings for use on overhead power lines.
The tests and test procedures may also be applied to similar fittings, outside the scope of this standard, intended for use in:
- The overhead equipment of electric traction lines
- Substations.
Who is BS 3288-1- Performance of insulator and conductor fittings for?
BS 3288-1 on insulator and conductor fittings is relevant to:
- Electrical engineers
- Suppliers and purchasers of overhead power line fittings
- Power transmission and distribution companies
- Distribution network operators
- Inspection agencies
- Consultants, specifiers and overhead line contractors
- Those working on the National Grid
Why should you use BS 3288-1- Performance of insulator and conductor fittings?
An overhead power line is a structure used in electric power transmission and distribution to transmit electrical energy across large distances.
BS 3288-1 outlines the most up-to-date performance and general requirements for overhead power line fittings. It covers insulator and conductor fittings such as joints, clamps and fasteners, and gives requirements on performance, corrosion protection and dimensional tolerances.
BS 3288-1 makes users aware of testing regimes and inspection sampling, as well as giving guidance on mathematical calculations and sampling methods, including:
- Type testing
- Mechanical testing
- Tensile testing
- Electrical testing
- Deflection tests
- Thermal-cycling tests
BS 3288-1 provides best industry guidance and requirements for overhead power line fittings, performance, corrosion protection, and dimensional tolerances. These apply especially to those parts of the fittings that are in direct contact with the conductor.
Thus, BS 3288-1 can demonstrate the reliability, quality and performance of insulator and conductor fittings, such that incidents of product failures and disruption of network is minimized.
