What is BS 3416 - Bitumen-based coatings for cold application about?
BS 3416 is a British Standard that discusses bitumen-based coatings suitable for use in contact with potable water. The main aim of BS 3416 is to provide best industry requirements for bitumen-based coatings to ensure they offer adequate corrosion protection and waterproofing and at the same time do not pose as a concern for public health.
BS 3416 specifies performance and marking requirements for a range of bitumen-based solvent-borne coatings. BS 3416 covers coatings for cold application by either brushing, spraying, rolling, or dipping processes intended to give a coat for the corrosion protection and water-proofing of substrates including iron and steel.
Two types, each with three classes, are included. All of these five films are suitable for use on potable water tanks and cisterns as well as for general applications and The level of gloss of the finished film is not specified in BS 3416.
Note: These bitumen coatings are neither intended to withstand hot conditions, such as on boilers, smoke stacks, etc., for which special coatings should be obtained nor to resist contamination with mineral oils or paint solvents, all of which conditions will cause softening of the film.
Note: Guidance on the use of bitumen-based coatings is given in Appendix A, BS 5493, and BS 6150.
Note: The titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover.
Who is BS 3416 - Bitumen-based coatings for cold application for?
BS 3416 on bitumen-based coatings for cold application is relevant to:
- Bitumen-based coating manufacturers
- Potable water storage tank manufacturers
- Quality control and testing personnel
- Product designers
- Piping and construction industry
- Mechanical engineers
- Local and national bodies
Why should you use BS 3416 - Bitumen-based coatings for cold application?
Storage of potable water in a manner that ensures the purity of the water is not compromised, is an essential consideration when it comes to maintaining public health and safety. If potable water tanks are not waterproofed with the right materials, not only can it cause structural damage in the form of cracks but also lead to contamination of water that can be detrimental to health of individuals. To prevent such hazards, it is essential that local authorities or manufacturers of potable water tanks ensure that the coatings play a positive role in provision of high-quality water for consumption.
BS 3416 contains requirements for bitumen-based coatings suitable for use in contact with potable water. Guidance on drying and overcoating times, finish, and storage recommendations are provided.
Guidance on the use of bitumen-based coatings for cold application and methods of test for performance requirements is also covered in BS 3416.
As a result, if you are a manufacturer, you can determine whether or not your products are capable of providing adequate corrosion resistance while also maintaining the quality of potable water.
