What is BS 3531-6.1 - Specification for general requirements of skeletal pins and wires about?
BS 3531 is a European standard that discusses implants for osteosynthesis. BS 3531-6.1 outlines the basic requirements for skeletal pins and wires, made of wrought austenitic stainless steel, wrought cobalt-chromium-tungsten-nickel alloy, or wrought titanium alloy, used in orthopaedic surgery.
Provision is made for:
- Skeletal pins used for skeletal traction and in compression clamps, e.g., Steinmann pins
- Skeletal wires used for skeletal traction and fixation, e.g., Kirschner wires
- Guidewires used to aid the insertion of other devices such as cannulated hip nails
- Fixation and threaded pins and wires that are used for the fixation of displaced upper femoral epiphysis or in the treatment of fractures.
Who is BS 3531-6.1 - Specification for general requirements of skeletal pins and wires for?
BS 3531-6.1 on the specifications for general requirements of skeletal pins and wires are useful for:
- Manufacturers of skeletal pins and wires
- Test centres
- Regulatory authorities
Why should you use BS 3531-6.1 - Specification for general requirements of skeletal pins and wires?
Metal wires are used in orthopaedic surgery in a variety of ways, for methods of skeletal traction, for compression arthrodesis, for fixation of fractures, and as guidewires in the insertion of other internal fixation devices.
BS 3531-6.1 guides you regarding the materials, packaging and marking of implants to improve the quality and durability of skeletal pins and wires.
BS 3531-6.1 provides the dimensions, point and head of shank for manufacturing efficient skeletal pins of high quality.
BS 3531-6.1 also guides in manufacturing guide wires and Fixation and threaded pins or wires by providing appropriate dimensions.
With obedience and compliance to BS 3531-6.1, you can standardize skeletal pins and wires used in orthopaedic surgery. In addition, ensure the safety of patients.
