What is BS 4029 – Tensile elastic recovery about?
BS 4029 is an international standard that focuses on the determination of tensile elastic recovery of single fibres and filaments (constant-rate-of-extension machines).
BS 4029 specifies a method of test for the measurement of tensile elastic recovery of all types of single filaments or fibres when subjected to the tensile strain applied by a constant-rate-of-extension machine. No special pre-treatments such as mechanical cycling or relaxation of internal stresses by immersion in boiling water are specified, although they may be required for some special purposes.
Note: BS 4029 does not determine the elastic recovery from given stress.
Who is BS 4029 – Tensile elastic recovery for?
BS 4029 on the determination of tensile elastic recovery of single fibres and filaments (constant-rate-of-extension machines) is useful for:
- Textile manufacturer
- Clothing industries
- Textile testing laboratories
- Fabric quality assurance authorities
- Regulatory authorities
- Product development teams
Why should you use BS 4029 – Tensile elastic recovery?
Fabrics made from both natural and manufactured fibres have been extensively used for clothing, decoration, and industrial applications. The physical and mechanical properties of these fabrics are affected by the fibre type, yarn construction, and fabric structure, as well as any treatment that may have been applied to the materials.
BS 4029 is prepared in order to meet the needs of the man-made fibre section of the textile industry. Although data on tensile elastic recovery are not normally specified for commercial purposes, they may be required in the assessment of the suitability of a given type of fibre for particular purposes and are often quoted in manufacturers’ publications and the technical press.
BS 4029 lays down the technicalities for carrying out a test procedure to determine the tensile elastic recovery of single fibres and filaments. It gives you detailed information about the apparatus needed to perform the test, explains the principle of the test, and helps the users to execute the procedure and calculations. It also talks about the conditioning and testing atmosphere and the content of the final test report.
BS 4029 mentions that values for the tensile elastic recovery of fibre may vary considerably with the conditions of the test, and no single set of conditions will define adequately the behaviour of the fibre. But it definitely sets a framework for examining the tensile elastic recovery of the single fibres and filaments.
