What is BS 4129 - Welding primers for resistance welding of sheet steel about?
Welding primer is a film material that is applied to an unpainted steel surface for protective purposes which does not have to be removed prior to welding and does not prevent the making of an acceptable weld.
BS 4129 is a British Standard that discusses the welding primers for resistance welding of sheet steel. The purpose of BS 4129 is to provide best industry specifications for welding coatings such that they exhibit optimal protection required for the success of resistance welding process.
BS 4129 specifies requirements for the resistance welding characteristics of the following coatings:
- Welding primers
- Weld-through sealants and adhesives
- Weld-through waxes
The resistance welding processes are suitable for welding primers and weld-through sealants, adhesives and waxes are spot, seam and projection welding.
Note 1: BS 4129 specifies requirements for resistance stud welding but does not cover arc stud welding.
Note 2: The titles of the publications referred to in BS 4129 are listed on the inside back cover.
Who is BS 4129 - Welding primers for resistance welding of sheet steel for?
BS 4129 on welding primers for resistance welding of sheet steel is useful for:
- Welding primer, sealant and adhesive manufacturers
- Welding equipment manufacturers
- Welders and fabricators
- Paint industry
Why should you use BS 4129 - Welding primers for resistance welding of sheet steel?
Welding primers are typically used before the welding process. A weld through primer's aim is to prevent corrosion and rusting of metal joints when two metal pieces are welded together, as well as to offer permanent corrosion protection on the inner edges of the welded metal pieces.
BS 4129 provides you with classifications, coating procedures, welding and test procedure that demonstrate that the welding primer or weld-through sealant, adhesive or wax does not prevent production of satisfactory spot welds. The tests determine contact resistance, electrical continuity, weldability, flammability and toxicity/fume levels of the primers and sealants.
A series of tests, together with acceptance criteria, is also specified, covering the welding of these coatings on steel.
Thus, compliance with the best-industry requirements and test methods specified in BS 4129 for the welding primers and weld-through sealants, adhesives, and waxes can ultimately improve the quality of spot welds.
