What is BS 416-1 – Specification for spigot and socket systems about?
BS 416 is a set of British Standard that discusses fittings of discharge and ventilation pipes. The main aim of the BS 416 series is to provide manufacturers with best industry guidance on discharge and ventilating pipes and fittings such that they play a positive role in the performance of the overall drainage system.
BS 416-1 is the first part of the BS 416 series that specifies cast grey or ductile iron spigot and socket pipes manufactured by either the sand-cast or the spun process, with either Type A or Type B sockets.
BS 416-1 also specifies sand-cast fittings.
For the convenience of specifiers and purchasers, a list of options available is given in Appendix A of BS 416-1.
Who is BS 416-1 - Specification for spigot and socket systems for?
BS 416-1 on specification for spigot and socket systems  is relevant to:
- Spigot and socket manufacturers and designers
- Discharge and ventilating pipe and fitting manufacturers and designers
- Specifiers
- Mechanical engineers
- Civil engineers
- Inspection and quality testing personnel
- Local bodies
Why should you use BS 416-1 - Specification for spigot and socket systems?
In a pipework system, pipes and fittings of different pressures and stiffnesses may be used. However, for them to be reliable and effective at the point of use, it is vital that they comply with best industry specifications.
In this regard, BS 416-1 provides necessary specifications for pipes and fittings for use above ground in discharge or ventilating pipe systems in buildings.
BS 416-1 mentions requirements for material, dimensions and tolerances of the joints, as well as coatings and marking needs.
If you are a manufacturer, compliance with the leakage test can help demonstrate whether or not your products offer adequate leaktightness.
BS 416-1 provides you with the manufacturing, assessment and verification guidelines for the standardized performance of spigot and socket systems. Thus, BS EN 416-1 can ensure the spigot and socket systems are fit for its intended application, and incidents of product failures are minimized.
