What is BS 4317-11-Determination of glycosidic hydrocyanic acid in pulses about?
BS 4317 is a British standard on methods of test for cereals and pulses that discusses the determination of glycosidic hydrocyanic acid in pulses to ensure pulses are safe for consumption.
BS 4317-11 is the eleventh part of the BS 4317 series that specifies a method for the determination of glycosidic hydrocyanic acid in pulses.
The method under BS 4317-11 is generally applicable but may require modification if sulphides or certain other sulphur compounds are present. Conversely, if no such compounds are present, a mercurimetric titration procedure may be used, details of which are given in the Annex.
Who is BS 4317-11-Determination of glycosidic hydrocyanic acid in pulses for?
BS 4317-11 on the determination of glycosidic hydrocyanic acid in pulses is useful for:
- Pulses manufacturers
- Food scientists
- Food technologists
- Food laboratories
- Food health and safety departments
Why should you use BS 4317-11-Determination of glycosidic hydrocyanic acid in pulses?
Glycosidic hydrocyanic acid in pulses is determined according to the method described the content of glycosidic hydrocyanic acid is expressed as milligrams of hydrocyanic acid (HCN) per kilogram of product. Small concentrations of hydrocyanic acid if inhaled, causes headache, dizziness, feeling of suffocation, nausea, etc.
BS 4317-11 provides you with guidance on the apparatus, sampling, the procedures for the preparation of test sample, determination, methods of hydrolysis, alternative hydrolysis procedures, distillation, titration, blank test, expression of results, test report, etc.
The methods and procedures provided by BS 4317-11 assist you in the determination of glycosidic hydrocyanic acid in pulses, improving the quality and subsistence of pulses and ensuring a reduction in the risk to human health due to the consumption of glycosidic hydrocyanic acid content.
With obedience and compliance to BS 4317-11, you can enhance pulses’ effectiveness and efficacy and manufacture a standardized high-quality product.
