What is BS 4361-14 – Routing machines about?
BS 4361-14 focuses on woodworking machines. The main aim of the BS 4361 series is to provide manufacturers with best industry practices for the verification of the accuracy of the machine.
BS 4361-14 is the 14th part of the BS 4361 series of standards that specifies the nomenclature appropriate to each part of the machine and, with reference to ISO 230-1, the geometrical tests for routing machines, and gives the corresponding permissible deviations which apply to machines of general purpose use and normal accuracy.
Note 1: BS 4361-14 does not apply to the testing of the running of the machine (vibrations, abnormal noises, stick-slip motion of the components, etc.), nor to its characteristics (speeds, feeds, etc.) which should generally be checked before the accuracy is tested.
Note 2: BS 4361-14 does not impose any practical test. For routing machines, practical tests are an exception and need be performed only where there is prior agreement between the manufacturer and the user.
Who is BS 4361-14 - Routing machines for?
BS 4361-14on routing machines is useful for:
- Routing machines manufacturers
- Machine designers
- Importers
- Quality control and testing authorities
Why should you use BS 4361-14 - Routing machines?
The router is a power tool with a flat base and a rotating blade extending past the base. The spindle may be driven by an electric motor or by a pneumatic motor. It routs (hollows out) an area in hard material, such as wood. Routers are used most often in woodworking, especially cabinetry. To ensure routing machines offer reliability when in use, it is vital that they undergo the best industry verification.
BS 4361-14 provides nomenclature that helps to understand the terms of the machines and brings uniformity in manufacturing, documentation, research, and product development.  BS 4361-14 provides test methods that shall be followed while manufacturing routing machines. This will help to ensure that routing machines are performing as per the requirement and are accurate.
If you are a manufacturer, this can ensure that your products meet the required performance levels.
