What is BS 4553-3 - Thermosetting insulating cables about?
BS 4553-3 is a British standard for thermosetting insulated cables. BS 4553-3 guidelines specify requirements for construction and describe methods of test for XLPE-insulated single-phase split concentric cables for operation on an earthed neutral system at nominal voltages up to and including 1 000 V between phases and 600 V to earth, and which, when assessed by the specified tests, produce lower levels of smoke and corrosive products under exposure to fire, compared with corresponding cables conforming to BS 4553-1 and BS 4553-2.
BS 4553-3 guidelines outlines about the basis for a quantitative statement of the suitability of such materials for radiation environments and therefore provides a guide for material specifications and for procurement agreements between suppliers and users.
BS 4553-3, the level of corrosive (and acid) gases is determined by measurement of hydrochloric acid (HCl) in accordance with BS EN 50267-2-1.
Who is BS 4553-3 - Thermosetting insulating cables for?
BS 4553-3 on thermosetting insulating cables is useful for:
- Automated equipment manufacturer
- Cables manufacturer
- The electrical industry
- Testing and inspection officers
- Circuit manufacturer
- Electrical cable manufacturers/suppliers
Why should you use BS 4553-3 - Thermosetting insulating cables?
BS 4553-3 provides guidelines to manufacturers on how to use or thermosetting insulating cables for adequate performance in that application.
BS 4553-3 provides its users with the range of split concentric cables which have thermosetting insulation and non-halogenated sheaths and low emission of smoke and acid gas when affected by the fire. In addition, BS 4553-3 contains the option of solid aluminium conductors or stranded copper conductors, as well as the option of using a separate extruded bedding to build up the core to a diameter suitable for applying the split concentric layer. Users should ensure that any interconnection between cables with these new colours and those with the pre-existing ones is carried out safely.
Using BS 4553-3 guidelines ensure safety and protection, durability, and quality assurance for its users.
