What is BS 4656-29 - Multi-spindle automatic lathe machines about?
BS 4656-29 is the 29th part of the BS 4656 multi-series that discusses the accuracy of machine tools and test methods.
BS 4656-29 specifies, with reference to BS 3800, geometrical tests for automatic lathes of multi-spindle indexing drum type and gives corresponding permissible deviations which apply.
BS 4656-29 is applicable to machines of general-purpose use and normal accuracy.
BS 4656-29 deals only with verifying the accuracy of the machine.
Note: BS 4656-29 does not apply to the testing of the running of the machine (vibrations, abnormal noises, stick-slip motion of components, etc.) nor to its characteristics (speeds, feeds, etc.) which should generally be checked before testing accuracy.
Who is BS 4656-29 - Multi-spindle automatic lathe machines for?
BS 4656-29 on the specification for multi-spindle automatic lathes is useful for:
- Manufacturers of lathe machines
- Designers of lathe machines
- Quality control personnel
- Testing and inspection personnel
Why should you use BS 4656-29 - Multi-spindle automatic lathe machines?
A lathe machine is used primarily to shape metal or wood. It works by rotating the workpiece around a stationary cutting tool. Lathe machines are used to remove unwanted parts of the material, leaving behind a nicely shaped workpiece. However, these machines need to be regularly verified for accuracy to identify whether there is any disturbance in their components that could affect their operational capability.
The tests described in BS 4656-29 can be applied in any order that is practicable and that makes for ease of mounting of instruments or gauging. The test methods of BS 4656-29 help you to verify whether the components of the multi-spindle automatic lathe machines are designed and installed accurately and have permissible deviations.
Overall, the test methods of BS 4656-29 help you to verify and enhance the build quality of your multi-spindle automatic lathe machines.
