What is BS 4656-35 - Accuracy of lathe machines about?
BS 4656-35 is the 35th part of the BS 4656 multi-series that discusses the accuracy of machine tools and test methods.
BS 4656-35 describes, with reference to ISO 230-1, both geometrical and practical tests on general-purpose and normal accuracy capstan, turret and single spindle automatic lathes. BS 4656-35 deals only with verifying the accuracy of the machine.
Note1: BS 4656-35 does not apply to the testing of the running of the machine (vibrations, abnormal noises, stick-slip motion of components, etc.) or to machine characteristics (such as speeds, feeds, etc.) which should generally be checked before the accuracy is tested.
Note2: BS 4656-35 does not cover machines with contouring numerical control, machines with sliding headstocks, machines with rotating tools, nor single spindle automatic lathes with fixed combined system headstock.
Who is BS 4656-35 - Accuracy of lathe machines for?
BS 4656-35 on the accuracy of machine tools and methods of the test is useful for:
- Manufacturers of lathe machines
- Designers of lathe machines
- Quality control personnel
- Testing and inspection personnel
Why should you use BS 4656-35 - Accuracy of lathe machines?
A lathe machine is used primarily to shape metal or wood. It works by rotating the workpiece around a stationary cutting tool. Lathe machines are used to remove unwanted parts of the material, leaving behind a nicely shaped workpiece. However, these machines need to be regularly verified for accuracy to identify whether there is any disturbance in their components that could affect their operational capability.
The tests described in BS 4656-35 can be applied in any order that is practicable and that makes for ease of mounting of instruments or gauging. The test methods of BS 4656-35 help you to verify whether the components of lathe machines like bed, headstock spindle, slide bases and turret (only for turret lathe machines) are designed accurately and have permissible deviations.
Overall, the test methods of BS 4656-35 help you to verify and enhance the build quality of your lathe machines.
