What is BS 5131-1.9 - Measurement of green strength of adhesive joints about?
BS 5131 is a series on methods of test for footwear and footwear materials. Footwear refers to garments worn on the feet, which typically serve the purpose of protection against adversities of the environment such as wear from ground textures and temperature. BS 5131-1.9 describes a method for measuring the resistance to peeling of an adhesive joint between two sheet materials immediately after it is made. This is usually known as the green strength.
The main purpose of the test is to enable the green strength of joints made with various solvent-based adhesives between specific soling and upper materials to be compared. The test can also be used for joints between other materials provided that at least one of them is flexible.
Who is BS 5131-1.9 - Measurement of green strength of adhesive joints for?
BS 5131-1.9 on the measurement of green strength of adhesive joints is useful for:
- Footwear manufacturing industries
- Quality control personnel
- Design engineers
Why should you use BS 5131-1.9 - Measurement of green strength of adhesive joints?
Footwear in the manner of shoes therefore primarily serves the purpose to ease locomotion and prevent injuries. Footwear can also be used for fashion and adornment as well as to indicate the status or rank of the person within a social structure. BS 5131-1.9 defines that adequate green strength is especially important for sole-attaching adhesives during shoe manufacture, as otherwise, the sole bond may partially fail cohesively, i.e., within the adhesive film, after leaving the press. BS 5131-1.9 describes the principle that the two adherents of a bonded assembly are peeled apart immediately after bonding by forces acting at an angle of 180°.
The peel angle depends on the flexibility of the adherend materials. The peeling force is recorded continuously and the average value of 60 s after application of full bonding pressure is calculated from the graph. Items included in the test reports are the green strength expressed in accordance with clause 7, types of failure observed and the percentage of the total peeled area that each failure type represents, description of the adherents and their method of preparation, the type of adhesive, method of application and number of coats applied, adhesive drying conditions and open time, details of activation of adhesive, reference to the method of test and date of testing. Using BS 5131-1.9 you can describe a method for measuring of green strength of adhesive joints.
