What is BS 5202-9 - Alkaloid retention by filters of cigarettes about?
BS 5202-9 is the ninth part of a multi-series standard that covers alkaloid retention by filters of cigarettes, enabling the accurate chemical analysis of cigarettes.
BS 5202-9 specifies two methods for the spectrometric determination of alkaloid retention by filters of cigarettes:
- Direct method
- Indirect method
In BS 5202-9, the direct method shall be used unless it is not applicable owing to incomplete recovery of the retained alkaloids from the filter material (for example, with some types of charcoal filters).
In BS 5202-9, the indirect method is not applicable to cigarettes with perforated or porous filter tipping wraps.
Note 1: BS 5202-9 is not applicable in the case of filters having irreversible nicotine retention and equipped with perforated or porous wrapping.
Note 2: BS 5202-9 methods determine the retention only of alkaloids of tobacco smoke, expressed as nicotine. The retention of other substances present in the mainstream smoke is not necessarily related to the alkaloid retention.
Who is BS 5202-9 - Alkaloid retention by filters of cigarettes for?
BS 5202-9 on the alkaloid retention by filters of cigarettes applies to:
- Manufacturers of cigarettes
- Dealers and importers of cigarettes
- Testing labs for cigarettes
- Regulatory bodies
Why should you use BS 5202-9 - Alkaloid retention by filters of cigarettes?
Alkaloid retention index of a cigarette filter is the ratio, expressed as a percentage by mass, of the alkaloids retained by the filter to those entering the filter.
BS 5202-9 provides users guidance on the spectrometric method for the determination of alkaloid retention by filters of cigarettes. BS 5202-9 also provides users with a step-by-step procedure for the method, enabling users to do the method correctly.
BS 5202-9 provides users guidance on principle, reagents, apparatus, sampling, procedure, calculation, expression of results, and test report, enabling accuracy in the determination of alkaloid retention by filters of cigarettes.
With obedience and compliance to BS 5202-9, users can perform chemical analysis of cigarettes to determine the alkaloid retention and provide an extensive test report for the design and development of cigarettes.
What’s changed since the last update?
