BS 5266-1:2005 Emergency lighting. Code of practice for the emergency lighting of premises

BS 2566-1:2005 provides essential recommendations for emergency lighting installed in all buildings apart from individual domestic dwellings. The code of practice outlines how to meet European standards BS EN 1838 and BS EN 50172, including guidance on emergency lighting system design, installation and wiring. BS EN 2566-1:2005 also outlines the suitability of systems designed for buildings with different purposes – such as cinemas and blocks of flats. Regulations for emergency system lighting levels can be found in BS EN 1838.

The BS 2566-1:2005 code of practice enables you to meet European standards when designing, installing or wiring emergency lights. Meeting these recommendations is essential to the safety of building occupants. BS EN 2566-1:2005 explains how to ensure emergency lighting operates automatically in an emergency situation and is positioned for maximum impact, such as above fire exits. The standard also outlines ways to ensure emergency lighting operates long enough to allow the safe evacuation of all building occupants.
