What is BS 5892-4- Forged and rolled tyres specifications about?
BS 5892 is a European standard that discusses rolling stock materials in railways. BS 5892-4 is the fourth part of the multi-part series that specifies requirements for the manufacture, inspection and testing of forged and rolled steel tyres for traction and trailing stock.
BS 5892-4 also includes requirements for the dimensions and tolerances that are to be adopted unless otherwise specified in the design drawing.
Who is BS 5892-4 - Forged and rolled tyres specifications for?
BS 5892-4 on forged and rolled tyres specifications is relevant to:
- Forged and rolling tyres manufacturers
- Any entity involved in testing and inspection of forged and rolled tyres
- Railway authorities
- Manufacturers of railway rolling stock materials
Why should you use BS 5892-4- Forged and rolled tyres specifications?
A forged wheel is manufactured from a billet or a large square piece of solid metal. The billet is heated to extreme temperatures and pressurised to take its shape. The manufacturing process results in a stronger wheel by eliminating cavities, porosity, and shrinkage. Due to their tighter grain structure, forged wheels are also mechanically stronger, ensuring better wear resistance over time.
BS 5892-4 provides guidelines and assistance related to steel making, manufacture of tyres, hydrogen cracking, appearance, identification of the tyres during manufacture, heat treatment, the rectification of ovality and buckle, dimensions and removal of surface defects for manufacturing efficient forged and rolled durable tyres of high quality.
BS 5892-4 also assists you with various test methods like chemical analysis, tensile test, impact test (Charpy U), hardness test, Ultrasonic flaw detection test and checking of dimensions. This assists in evaluating forged and rolled tyres to enhance their efficiency and durability.
With compliance to dimensions and tolerances under BS 5892-4, you can manufacture standardised forged and rolled tyres that have global acceptance in the market. In addition, can prevent wastage due to manufacturing tyres of incorrect size.
