What is BS 5892-7 - Specification for product and technical approval requirements for cast wheels about?
BS 5892 is a European standard that discusses the railway rolling stock materials. BS 5892-7 is the seventh part of the multi-part series that outlines the characteristics of and technical approval requirements for cast railway wheels to manufacture efficient cast wheels for smooth rail operation.
BS 5892-7 can be applied in conjunction with BS or BS EN standards for axles and wheelsets. Three steel grades, C48, C56 and C64, are defined in BS 5892-7.
BS 5892-7 applies to cast wheels that are rim-chilled and have their wheel webs shot-peened. The wheels defined in BS 5892-7 are for applications up to 120 km/h. BS 5892-7 only applies to wheels of a new design or new application.
The requirements outlined in BS 5892-7 are intended to be used to assess the validity of the design the choice for the proposed use and constitute the technical approval procedure.
Note 1: BS 5892-7 does not apply to urban rail.
Note 2: BS 5892-7 does not cover the assessment of the hub nor of the static mechanical dimensioning of the wheel.
Note 3: For BS 5892-7, the steels referred to as C48, C56 and C64 are based on those defined as AAR Class L, A and B respectively.
Who is BS 5892-7 -Specification for product and technical approval requirements for cast wheels for?
BS 5892-7 on the specification for product and technical approval requirements for cast wheels is useful for:
- Manufacturers of cast wheels
- Test centres
- Regulatory authorities
Why should you use BS 5892-7 -Specification for product and technical approval requirements for cast wheels?
Cast wheels are commonly used by railways. The wheels are initially cast or forged and then heat-treated to have a specific hardness. New wheels are machined using a lathe to a standardised shape, called a profile, before being installed into an axle. All wheels are regularly checked to ensure proper interaction between the wheel and the rail.
BS 5892-7 provides a complete definition of the product and delivery procedures for cast wheels by defining all the wheel characteristics, qualification procedures and defining delivery conditions.
BS 5892-7 assists you with technical approval, parameters for the technical approval process, assessment of the geometric parameters, assessment of the thermomechanical behaviour, assessment of the mechanical behaviour, assessment of the acoustic behaviour, technical approval documents, and qualification.
This assists in manufacturing efficient cast wheels and improving the durability and efficiency of cast wheels to build a product that has global acceptance in the market.
With obedience and compliance to BS 5892-7, you can enhance the efficacy and standardise cast wheels used in railway rolling stock. In addition, ensure the durability of cast wheels for a long period.
