What is BS 6533 – Steel by etching about?
BS 6533 is a British standard that discusses the guide to macroscopic examination of steel by etching with strong mineral acids. Etching is used to reveal the microstructure of the metal through a selective chemical attack. It also removes the thin, highly deformed layer introduced during grinding and polishing.
BS 6533 gives guidance on and describes methods for the macroscopic examination of steel by etching with strong mineral acids. The methods given have very wide applications. Selection of the type and concentration of the reagent, the temperature of the reagent and the conditions of surface preparation of the test piece make it possible to achieve an informed description of the etched surface.
Who is BS 6533 – Steel by etching for?
BS 6533 on steel by etching applies to:
- Manufacturer of metal etching
- Design engineers
Why should you use BS 6533 – Steel by etching?
Etching is used to reveal the microstructure of the metal through a selective chemical attack. It also removes the thin, highly deformed layer introduced during grinding and polishing.
BS 6533 provides you with the preparation of a sample that includes machining, polishing and surface cleanliness. It also provides an etching procedure which includes: Method and time of application.
BS 6533 provides you with the principle in which the macroscopic examination after etching with mineral acids may reveal a lack of chemical uniformity (segregation of elements), lack of physical uniformity (cracks, porosity) and any structural variations such as those caused, for instance, by hardening, decarburization, and case hardening.
BS 6533 provides you with comprehensive guidance useful throughout the process of production.
