What is BS 658:1989- Apparatus for the determination of distillation range about?
BS 658 discusses specifications for apparatus. BS 658 specifies requirements for a range of components for the apparatus used in the determination of the distillation characteristics of materials.
Following are the apparatus used for the determination of the distillation characteristics of materials:
- Distillation flasks of sizes between 50 mL and 750 mL
- Three Crow receivers of two classes of accuracy
- Glass condensers of air-cooled and fluid-cooled designs
- Metal condensers and cooling bath
- Draught screens of three types
- Heaters using either gas or electricity
Who is BS 658:1989- Apparatus for the determination of distillation range for?
BS 658:1989 on apparatus for the determination of distillation range is useful for:
- Laboratory equipment manufacturers
- Quality control personnel
Why should you use BS 658:1989- Apparatus for the determination of distillation range?
Distillation is used to separate liquids from nonvolatile solids, as in the separation of alcoholic liquors from fermented materials, or in the separation of two or more liquids having different boiling points and lubricating oil from crude oil. Hence it is important to have good quality apparatus.
BS 658 provides you guidance on material, dimensions, details of the construction and marking of distillation flask, receivers, condensers, draught screens and heaters. BS 658 guides you on the assembly of the distillation apparatus. BS 658 helps you manufacture high-quality apparatus.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS 658:1989 supersedes BS 658:1962, which is withdrawn. BS 658:1989 includes some technical changes with respect to BS 658:1962. These include:
- Text associated with the determination of distillation properties (eg. correction of barometric pressure) has been omitted
- The 130 mL distillation flask has been replaced by a 125 mL distillation flask which is now in widespread use
- A 200 mL distillation flask has been introduced
- The type 2 receivers have been omitted since, for very small volumes, the type 1 receivers should be used and, for larger volumes graduated glass measuring cylinders complying with the requirements of BS 604 are considered suitable
- Glass tubing complying with BS 5895 has, where possible, been used
