What is BS 7119- Seismic pick-ups about?
BS 7119 is an International Standard that discusses the specifications for shock and vibration measurements.
BS 7119 lays down rules for the presentation of important characteristics for electro-mechanical shock and vibration pick-ups (seismic pick-ups), the electrical outputs of which are known functions of the uniaxial, multiaxial, or angular accelerations, velocities, or displacements of objects, the motions of which are being measured.
Throughout BS 7119, shock and vibration pick-ups are referred to simply as “pick-ups”.
Who is BS 7119- Seismic pick-ups for?
BS 7119 on seismic pick-ups is relevant to:
- Manufacturers of seismic pick-ups
- Manufacturers of auxiliary equipment
- Mechanical engineers
- Electrical engineers
- Electricians
- Testing authorities
Why should you use BS 7119- Seismic pick-ups?
A seismic pick-up consists of a mass-spring-damper system mounted on the vibrating body.
BS 7119 guides the instrument manufacturers in indicating the characteristics of their pick-ups and helps users in selecting the pick-up or preparing performance specifications.
BS 7119 also states the material of the mounting base and surfaces exposed to its operational environment. BS 7119 aids in understanding the frequency range, earth currents, base-strain sensitivity, and radiation exposure of the seismic pick-ups.
Using BS 7119 ensures that the user receives an adequate description of the characteristics of any pick-up. BS 7119 states the suitability of the pick-up for use in vertical, horizontal, and inverted mounting positions.
