What is BS 7121-11 - Safe use of offshore cranes about?
BS 7121-11 is the 11th part of the BS 7121 multi-series that discusses the code of practice for the safe use of cranes.
BS 7121-11 gives recommendations for the safe use of offshore cranes (including supporting structures affixed to offshore installations), primarily operating in an open sea environment.
Note: The following activities are not covered in BS 7121-11:
- Slinging practices
- Crane erection practices
- Use of all non-slewing cranes used offshore [e.g., blowout preventer (BOP) cranes, overhead travelling cranes, gantry cranes, hoists and davits]
Who is BS 7121-11 - Safe use of offshore cranes for?
BS 7121-11 on code of practice for safe use of offshore cranes is useful for:
- Manufacturers of offshore cranes
- Owners of offshore cranes
- Operators of offshore cranes
- Maintenance personnel
- Testing and inspection personnel
Why should you use BS 7121-11 - Safe use of offshore cranes?
The offshore environment is sufficiently hostile that wave action can subject the crane and/or its load to motion, imposing demands on the crane and the crane operator that are more severe than in most other lifting operations. It is in the interest of all involved in lifting operations to ensure that these operations are carried out efficiently and safely.
BS 7121-11 provides guidance on understanding the crane’s performance and makes recommendations for the competence of operatives and other personnel. BS 7121-11 guidelines help you to keep your offshore cranes in peak operational condition by providing you with performance testing and inspection guidance. BS 7121-11 also helps you to train competent personnel to relay appropriate signals while operating the offshore crane or guiding the operators.
Overall, the guidance of BS 7121-11 helps you to ensure the safety of personnel and offshore cranes during operation, maintenance and inspection stages.
