What is BS 7160- Anchor chains for small craft about?
BS 7160 specifies the dimensions, characteristics and tolerances as well as galvanizing of anchor chains intended for use with small craft windlasses.
BS 7160 applies to anchor chains of nominal diameters between 6 and 12 mm, intended for anchoring small craft and which can be controlled using windlasses.
Note: BS 7160 does not apply to chains for lifting purposes
Who is BS 7160- Anchor chains for small craft for?
BS 7160 on manufacturing high-quality anchor chains for small crafts is useful for:
- Ship/marine chain manufacturers
- Ship manufacturers
- Quality control personnel
Why should you use BS 7160- Anchor chains for small craft?
The chain allows the anchor to set faster and more reliably by creating a downward pull on the anchor handle. Anchors play a critical role in the manoeuvring of ships and aid them in safely docking at ports and on the high seas. To keep an entire vessel (weighing a few hundred tons) in place, a heavyweight known as the anchor head provides the resistive forces.
BS 7160 provides you with dimensions, characteristics and tolerances as well as galvanizing of anchor chains. BS 7160 provides you with a test to assess the anchor chains. BS 7160 guides you on the preferred length and markings. BS 7160 guides you on designations and ordering of anchor chains. BS 7160 helps you to manufacture high-quality anchor chains for small crafts.
