What is BS 7604-1 - Determination of stress-optical coefficient of glass about?
BS 7604-1 is a British standard that discusses the determination of the stress-optical coefficient of glass. BS 7604-1 describes the tensile test for determining the stress-optical coefficient of isotropic glass.
Who is BS 7604-1 - Determination of stress-optical coefficient of glass for?
BS 7604-1 on determination of stress-optical coefficient of glass is useful for:
- Isotropic glass manufacturers
- Quality control personnel
- Testing authorities
Why should you use BS 7604-1 - Determination of stress-optical coefficient of glass?
The stress-optical coefficient is the characteristic value of materials, and it is necessary
for determining the stress from the results of measurement of stress birefringence.
BS 7604-1 can be used for stress analysis of isotropic glass as they exhibit stress-induced birefringence. Stress measurement using the tensile test necessitates the knowledge of the stress-optic coefficient of isotropic glass.
The use of the BS 7604-1 is recommended for calibration of isotropic glass as it takes into account the stress in glass samples apart from its potential for automation.
BS 7604-1 specifies the tensile test for determining the stress-optical coefficient of isotropic glass is improved to isotropic glass with stress which eliminates the need for annealing them. The method developed is self-consistent as the results are verified by the reconstruction of the composite fringe pattern.
