What is BS 8666 about?
BS 8666 is a British Standard on concrete reinforcing and pre-stressing steels that aims to enhance structural integrity in the construction sector.
BS 8666 specifies requirements for the scheduling, dimensioning, cutting and bending of steel for the reinforcement of concrete
Who is BS 8666 for?
BS 8666 on steel reinforcement of concrete is applicable to the construction sector. Specific users are:
- Civil engineers
- Designers
- Specifiers
- Contractors
- Rebar suppliers (cut and bent)
- Fabricators (mesh and prefab)
Why should you use BS 8666 standard
Steel reinforcement, also known as rebar, is widely used in the construction sector to enhance the tensile strength of concrete- a material that, by itself, exhibits brittle behaviour.
BS 8666 provides the latest techniques and methods required for scheduling, dimensioning, cutting and bending of steel for the reinforcement of concrete which will help you improve efficiency and quality for the product end-user.
BS 8666 keeps you abreast of latest developments related to best practices and techniques/shape dimensions for the design and manufacture of reinforcement steel.
BS 8666 is brought in line with Eurocode 2, thereby standardising the specifications and requirements of building and civil engineering works for a wider audience.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS 8666:2020 supersedes BS 8666:2005, which is withdrawn. Changes have been made throughout BS 8666:2020 to bring the standard into line with Eurocode 2 requirements. Major changes include:
- New shape codes added
- New data added
- 22 existing shape codes amended
- Changes to dimensioning of obtuse angles and cranked bars
- Table 1 update to include dowel bars and improve the requirements of stainless notations
