What is BS 869 - Specification for toolmakers’ flats and surface plates about?
BS 869 is an International Standard that discusses the technical specifications and uses of toolmakers’ flats and high precision surface plates.
BS 869 applies to circular hardened steel toolmakers’ flats that have a maximum diameter of 200 mm, and to cast iron or granite high precision surface plates which have a maximum diameter of 400 mm.
BS 869 discusses toolmakers' flats that are of high-quality steel, free from inclusions, and are made from hammered and upset blanks.
The working surface of the flats and plates described in BS 869 is finished by high-grade lapping2) free from noticeable scratches.
Who is BS 869 - Specification for toolmakers’ flats and surface plates for?
BS 869 on specification for toolmakers’ flats and surface plates is useful for:
- Manufacturers, suppliers and designers of toolmakers' flats and high precision surface plates
- Metrologists
- Metallurgical engineers
- Metallurgists
- Metal working industries
- Steel industries
- Testing authorities

Why should you use BS 869 - Specification for toolmakers’ flats and surface plates?
Toolmakers' flats are a small precision surface which are ideal for use in inspection and production areas. High precision surface plates are generally circular with adequate framing and ribbing underneath so that they are robust, and the distortion is reduced to the minimum while in use.
BS 869 specifies the material, features of designs and recommended sizes of toolmakers' flats and high precision surface plates that contribute to their performance characteristics. BS 869 discusses preservation and packing methods in different climatic conditions that assist with the protection of the product. BS 869 assists users with producing high-quality toolmakers' flats and high precision surface plates.
By adopting, BS 869 the user can understand more about toolmakers' flats and high precision surface plates which helps in measuring the precision of a workpiece and is useful in high voltage testing. Surface plates are a base for inspection, marking, toolmaking, gauging, spotting, and layout.
