What is BS 9227 - Hydraulically bound materials used in pavements about?
BS 9227 is a British standard that supplies UK construction requirements for hydraulically bound material (HBM) used in pavement layers.
BS 9227 specifies requirements for the production, installation, testing and conformity of hydraulically bound materials (HBM) conforming to BS EN 14227 for pavement applications, whether constructed by the ex-situ or in-situ methods.
BS 9227 also includes requirements for preliminary work at the laying site, needed to ensure that the substrate is fit to receive the HBM.
BS 9227 relates to HBM for use in pavements, including the pavement foundation.
NOTE: BS 9227 does not include a framework for investigating and assessing existing pavements to be recycled to produce HBM. Applications related to earthworks or other uses of HBM are not covered.
Who is BS 9227 - Hydraulically bound materials used in pavements for?
BS 9227 on hydraulically bound materials is applicable to-
- Civil engineers
- Manufacturers of binders
- Local authorities
- Government departments
- Contractors
Why should you use BS 9227 - Hydraulically bound materials used in pavements?
A hydraulically bound mixture is a mixture of aggregate, water, and binder, which is widely used in pavement construction.
The composition of the HBM is determined in BS 9227 to ensure the HBM has properties conforming to the project specification.
BS 9227 specifies users the working conditions of pavement with ex-situ or in-situ methods and gives laboratory mechanical performance tests for HBM like binders.
BS 9227 provides a workability period for HBM when one or more binders for the production of pavement are added at the same time or at different times.
BS 9227 navigates you through the classification of joints between HBM or other materials, induced cracking, weather conditions including temperature and curing and opening to trafficking.
Requirements for testing, control and quality checking of HBM are specified in BS 9227.
Moreover, BS 9227 guides you on the performance, behaviour, materials, mixture design, construction and control testing of hydraulically bound pavements. In this way, you can develop HBMs that are made using recycled material and cement and are a great cost-saving alternative to a traditional sub-base or base coarse aggregate.
