What is BS 978-3 – Bevel gear specification about?
BS 978-3 is a British Standard that discusses specifications for fine pitch gears.
BS 978-3 is the third part of the BS 978 multi-series and applies to machine cut conical gears, connecting intersecting shafts and having pitches from 20 to 80 DP. The teeth shall have a normal pressure angle of 20° at the pitch cone and they may be straight or curved.
Who is BS 978-3 - Bevel gear specification for?
BS 978-3 on bevel gear specification is useful for:
- Manufacturers and suppliers of machines with gears
- Product design teams/innovation teams
- Production / mechanical engineers
- Quality control personnel
- Health and safety authorities
- Manufacturers of bevel gears
- Mechanical engineers
- Industries/applications such as automotive, marine, railway, steel, and power plants
Why should you use BS 978-3 - Bevel gear specification?
The term "bevel gear" is used to mean straight, helical (skew), spiral bevel, zerol, and hypoid gear designs.
BS 978-3 provides for Class A gears for use where a high degree of accuracy is required, and Class B gears for other applications.
BS 978-3 walks you through aspects such as terminology and notation, addendum and dedendum, permissible errors, and tolerances for bevel gears.
Compliance with BS 978-3 can help you assess the tribological behaviour of the lubricated flank surface contact. This can ensure optimal operational efficiency of bevel gears in high load situations and long-duty cycle hours, minimizing the risk of product failure.
