What is BS EN 12007-5 - Functional requirements for service lines in gas pipeline systems about?
BS EN 12007 is a European Standard on gas infrastructure that discusses the general functional requirements for gas supply through the service line pipe systems. The main aim of the BS EN 12007 series is to ensure that the overall gas infrastructure is safe and reliable during operation.
BS EN 12007-5 is the fifth part of the series that describes the specific functional requirements for service lines in addition to the general functional requirements of EN 12007-1 for:
- A maximum operating pressure (MOP) up to and including 16 bar
- An operating temperature between -20 °C and +40 °C
BS EN 12007-5 applies to their design, construction, commissioning, decommissioning, operation, maintenance, extension and other associated works. The service line is the physical asset comprising of pipework from the gas main branch saddle or top tee to the outlet of the distribution system operator’s nominated point(s) of delivery (for example isolation valve, regulator, meter connection or combination of regulator and isolation valve).
Who is BS EN 12007-5 - Functional requirements for service lines in gas pipeline systems for?
BS EN 12007-5 on gas infrastructure is relevant to:
- Gas industry
- Pipeline component and pipeline manufacturers
- Stations or plants for the transmission and distribution of gas
- Entities involved in design, construction, commissioning, decommissioning, operation, maintenance of service lines
- Quality control and testing personnel
- Regulatory bodies
- Local and National authorities
Why should you use BS EN 12007-5 - Functional requirements for service lines in gas pipeline systems?
Gas infrastructure refers to the pipelines that gather, transport and distribute natural gas from producing wells to end-use consumers in order to maintain existing system flexibility and latent pipeline network capacity. In this regard, a service line is pipework from the gas main to the point of delivery of the gas into the installation pipework.
BS EN 12007-5 applies to design, construction, operation and the related aspects of safety, environment and public health, all in order to provide a safe and secure supply of gas.
BS EN 12007-5 guides you through the building and installation of service lines, as well as its storage, handling, and transportation.
BS EN 12007-5 specifies the examination of pipes, fittings, and associated equipment before and during installation to ensure their quality and suitability for installation.
Pressure testing procedures are defined in BS EN 12007-5 to demonstrate the integrity of service lines, such that incidents of product failures and leakages are prevented. Best industry guidance on service line operation and maintenance is also covered.
As a result, with BS EN 12007-5 requirements, you can incorporate safe gas engineering practices to effectively prevent hazards and risks encountered in the gas industry. Thus, complying with these practices can ensure your products and services play a positive role in the safety and performance of the overall gas infrastructure, thereby enhancing credibility and reliability of your business.
