What is BS EN 12504-4 about?
BS EN 12504-4 is the fourth part of the multi-series standard BS EN 12504. BS EN 12504-4 specifies a method for the determination of the velocity of propagation of pulses of ultrasonic longitudinal waves or ultrasonic transverse waves in hardened concrete, which is used for a number of applications.
A pulse of longitudinal or transverse vibrations is produced by an ultrasonic transducer held in contact with one surface of the concrete under test. After traversing a known path length in the concrete, the pulse of vibrations is converted into an electrical signal by a second ultrasonic transducer and an electronic timing device enables the transit time of the pulse to be measured.
Who is BS EN 12504-4 for?
BS EN 12504-4 on concrete testing is useful for:
- Cement manufacturing companies
- Suppliers of raw materials for concrete
- Civil engineers
- Construction companies
- Contractors
- Concrete specialists
Why should you use BS EN 12504-4?
It is necessary to assess the quality and velocity of concrete before constructing a building. In this regard, BS EN 12504-4 includes test methods such as the ultrasonic pulse velocity test to check the pulse velocity rate of concrete. An ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) test is an in-situ, non-destructive test to check the quality of concrete and natural rocks. The strength and quality of concrete or rock is assessed by measuring the velocity of an ultrasonic pulse passing through a concrete structure.
BS EN 12504-4 lets you manufacture with the test methods for determining the uniformity of concrete, the presence of cracks or voids, changes in properties with time and dynamic physical properties.
From a business perspective, with the purchase of BS EN 12504-4, test methods let you assess the quality of concrete in terms of strength, which in turn will help you build a stable and strong structure.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN 12504-4:2021 supersedes EN 125044:2004. BS EN 12504-4:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to EN 125044:2004. These include:
- Option to use equipment utilizing transverse waves
