What is BS EN 13130-5-Determination of vinylidene chloride in food simulants about?
BS EN 13130 is a European standard on materials and articles in contact with foodstuffs that discusses the determination of vinylidene chloride in food simulants to ensure food stimulants are safe for consumption.
BS EN 13130-5 is the fifth part of the BS EN 13130 series that specifies a method for the determination of vinylidene chloride monomer in food simulants.
The method under BS EN 13130-5 is applicable to aqueous food simulants, to the fatty food simulant olive oil and other fatty food simulants, simulants D, e.g., a mixture of synthetic triglycerides or sunflower oil or corn oil. The level of vinylidene chloride determined is expressed as milligrams of vinylidene chloride per kilogram of food simulant.
The method under BS EN 13130-5 is appropriate for the quantitative determination of vinylidene chloride at a level of 0,05 mg/kg.
Note: The method under BS EN 13130-5 was developed for the determination of vinylidene chloride in 15 % (v/v) aqueous ethanol, as required by the regulations in force at the time the development work was carried out. However, the method under BS EN 13130-5, developed for 15 (v/v) aqueous ethanol, should be applicable to the determination in 10 (v/v) aqueous ethanol.
Who is BS EN 13130-5-Determination of vinylidene chloride in food simulants for?
BS EN 13130-5 on the determination of vinylidene chloride in food simulants is useful for:
- Food stimulants manufacturers
- Food scientists
- Food technologists
- Food laboratories
- Food health and safety departments
Why should you use BS EN 13130-5-Determination of vinylidene chloride in food simulants?
Vinylidene chloride (VdC) (1,1-dichloroethylene), H2C=CCl2, is a monomer used in the manufacture of certain plastics films and coatings intended to encounter foodstuffs. During the manufacture of vinylidene chloride polymers and copolymers, residual vinylidene chloride monomer can remain in the polymer and can migrate into food encountering the polymer.
BS EN 13130-5 provides you with guidance on the apparatus, preparation of test samples, preparation of blank samples, preparation of calibration samples, procedure, expression of results, method of calculation, graphical determination using an internal standard, confirmation, test report, etc.
The test methods and procedures provided by BS EN 13130-5 assist you in the determination of vinylidene chloride in food simulants, improving the quality and subsistence of food stimulants and ensuring a reduction in the risk to human health due to consumption of vinylidene chloride content.
With obedience and compliance to BS EN 13130-5, you can enhance food simulants’ effectiveness and efficacy and manufacture a standardized product.
