What is BS EN 1425 - perceptible properties of bituminous binders about?
Bitumen is an essential component of pavements, and is used widely throughout the world. BS EN 1425 is a European Standard on bitumen and bituminous binders.
BS EN 1425 specifies a method for the determination of the perceptible properties of bituminous binders at ambient temperature prior to testing for other properties.
Who is BS EN 1425 - perceptible properties of bituminous binders for?
BS EN 1425 on perceptible properties of bituminous binders is useful for:
- Manufacturers of bitumen and bituminous binders
- Manufacturers and suppliers of construction materials
- The construction industry
- The cement / concrete industry
- Roadway / highway authorities
- Concrete specialists
- Civil engineers
- Contractors
- Testing laboratories
Why should you use BS EN 1425 - perceptible properties of bituminous binders?
Bituminous binders are adhesive materials that contain bitumen, which may be in the form of conventional bitumen, modified bitumen, or bitumen emulsion.
The properties of bituminous binders depend on a number of factors, such as type (pure bitumen, bitumen emulsion, cutback or fluxed bitumen) grade, and temperature. These physical properties are determined by the appropriate test methods. The perceptible properties, such as appearance and odour, are determined by censorial observation. It is, for instance, quite simple to distinguish by smell flux oil from a bituminous binder. However, in the case of bituminous binders such as bitumen emulsions, cutback, or fluxed bitumen, the presence of lumps, agglomerates or sediments can be observed.
In this regard, BS EN 1425 walks you through the fundamentals of properties, and guidance on the choice of the sampling method.
As a manufacturer of bitumen and bituminous binders, BS EN 1425 compliant sampling helps you to identify the quality of materials. This assessment can play a positive role in quality control and for product development purposes.
