What is BS EN 14654‑1 about?
BS EN 14654‑1 is the first part of the multi-series of documents that is applicable to drain and sewer systems outside buildings.
BS EN 14654‑1 establishes requirements for the management and control of activities in drain and sewer systems outside buildings and specifies requirements for the development and implementation of work programmes, and the selection of techniques. BS EN 14654-1 provides a framework for the design, construction, maintenance, operation and rehabilitation of drain and sewer systems outside buildings.
BS EN 14654‑1 is applicable to drain and sewer systems from the point where wastewater leaves a building, roof the drainage system, or paved area, to the point where it is discharged into a wastewater treatment plant or receiving water body.
Note: Drains and sewers below buildings are included if they do not form part of the drainage system of the building.

Why should you use BS EN 14654‑1?
Lack of proper drainage systems can lead to several issues like flooding, collapse of the building and unhygienic conditions. Underground drainage system minimizes the risk of water flooding at your property. The basic goal of a drainage system is to collect and eliminate waste matter in a systematic manner. Drainage systems are intended to dispose wastewater as fast as feasible and to keep sewage and septic tank gases out of residential areas to prevent diseases.
BS EN 14654-1 specifies the management and control of operations in drain and sewer systems located outside of buildings. It guides you to estimate the planning and implementation of work programmes, as well as the procedures to be used in doing maintenance work on public sewers and water pipes.
The approach of integrated sewer management under BS EN 14654-1 also considers the separation of foul wastewater and surface water. The pollutant effects are not the same and the separation of effluents allows for the different treatment for each element of wastewater, providing you with environmentally friendly solutions.
Through BS EN 14654‑1, you will be able to establish an efficient and hygienic sewage management system that not only takes into account public health and safety but also considers the protection of the environment from pollutants. The detailed procedure for conducting management and control of activities will thus align you with best practices that improve overall credibility.
