What is BS EN 14769 - Accelerated long-term ageing conditioning by a PAV about?
BS EN 14769 is a European standard on bitumen and bituminous binders. The main objective of BS EN 14769 is to ensure bitumen and bituminous binders play a positive role in maintaining the structural integrity of your civil engineering works.
BS EN 14769 specifies an accelerated ageing/conditioning procedure for bituminous binders.
The procedure involves ageing trays of the binder at elevated temperatures under pressurized conditions in a pressure ageing vessel (PAV).
Who is BS EN 14769 – Accelerated long-term ageing conditioning by a PAV for?
BS EN 14769 on bitumen and bituminous binders is useful for:
- Manufacturers of bitumen and bituminous binders
- Manufacturers and suppliers of construction materials
- Construction industry
- Civil engineers
- Contractors
Why should you use BS EN 14769 - Accelerated long-term ageing conditioning by a PAV?
Long-term ageing is deemed to represent the ageing a bituminous binder undergoes during the service life of an asphalt pavement. This practice is designed to simulate in-service oxidative aging that occurs in bituminous binders during pavement maintenance. The residue from this conditioning practice can be used to estimate the physical or chemical properties of asphalt binders after several years of aging in the field.
In this regard, BS EN 14769 walks you through the apparatus, reagents, and materials, as well as the test sampling and technique for ageing/conditioning for bituminous binders.
As a result, if you are a manufacturer of bitumen and bituminous binders, complying with BS EN 14769 can provide indications on the physical properties of the binders, determining whether it is capable of withstanding aging-related pavement failure modes include cracking (thermal or traffic induced) and ravelling.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN 14769:2012 supersedes EN 14769:2005. BS EN 14769:2012 includes some technical changes with respect to EN 14769:2005. These include:
