What is BS EN 15004-5 about?
BS EN 15004-5 is the fifth part in a multi-series that specific requirements for gaseous fire-extinguishing systems, with respect to the HFC 227ea extinguishant. It includes details of physical properties, specification, usage, and safety aspects.
BS EN 15004-5 covers systems operating at nominal pressures of 25 bar, 42 bar, and 50 bar with nitrogen propellant. This does not preclude the use of other systems.
Who is BS EN 15004-5 for?
BS EN 15004-5 on gas extinguishing systems is relevant to:
- Manufacturers of gas extinguishing systems
- Manufacturers of fire extinguishing equipment
- Product designers
- Installers
- Fire and safety department
- Regulatory bodies
Why should you use BS EN 15004-5?
A gas extinguishing system is a fire extinguishing system that extinguishes the fire with the help of a gaseous extinguishing agent through oxygen displacement. HFC-227ea leaves no residue on valuable equipment after discharge and can be used to protect a wide range of applications.
BS EN 15004-5 covers guidelines on system design, including requirements on fill density, super pressurization, extinguishant quantity as well as environmental properties.
BS EN 15004-5 is helpful as the adoption of these requirements and specifications can aid in protecting safety personnel from hazards arising from:
- The extinguishant itself
- The combustion products of the fire
- Breakdown products of the extinguishant resulting from exposure to fire
BS EN 15004-5 is beneficial as the properties, design and performance requirements and guidelines enables you to establish efficient firefighting systems during hazardous situations, that are devoid of product failures.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN 15004-5:2020 supersedes BS EN 15004‑5:2008, which is withdrawn. Some of the changes are:
- European foreword: Part 3 was removed from the list
- Foreword of ISO 14520-9 was removed
- Scope: Nominal pressure level 50 bar was added
