What is BS EN 1560 – Materials symbols and numbers about?
BS EN 1560 is a European standard that discusses the material symbols and material numbers for the designation system for cast iron. Cast irons have become an engineering material with a wide range of applications and are used in pipes, machines and automotive industry parts, such as cylinder heads, etc.
BS EN 1560 establishes a material designation system either by symbols or by numbers for cast iron. The designation system by symbols applies to:
- Standardized cast iron materials
- Non-standardized cast iron materials
The designation system by numbers is only applicable to standardized cast iron materials.
Who is BS EN 1560 – Materials symbols and numbers for?
BS EN 1560 on cast irons for materials applies to:
- Manufacturer of cast iron and steel products
- Iron industries
Why should you use BS EN 1560 – Materials symbols and numbers?
Iron is an incredibly useful substance. It's less brittle than stone yet, compared to wood or copper, extremely strong. If properly heated, iron is also relatively easy to shape into various forms, as well as refine, using simple tools.
Cast iron materials can be designated either by symbols or by numbers for all grades. The material number is based on principles and the structure set out in EN 10027-2. BS EN 1560 provides the overall structure for both material symbol structure and material number structure. The designation by symbols and numbers occupies a maximum of six positions:
- Position 1: EN
- Position 2: Symbol for cast iron
- Position 3: Symbol for graphite structure
- Position 4: Symbol for microstructure or macrostructure
- Position 5: Symbol for classification either by mechanical properties or by chemical composition
- Position 6: Symbol for additional requirements
Overall, BS EN 1560 is useful as it provides guidance on the materials symbols and numbers systems for cast iron which helps you in your business.
